Self confidence is a belief in one’s own abilities and talents the way one thinks and believes will have an impact on his or her decisions. Gaining self confidence is a process in itself and one cannot have it overnight. To develop a positive image and be successful one has to have self confidence. It is the key to move towards success in a right direction. It as well as gives us the liberty to commit mistakes and cope with failure and simultaneously help us in dealing with it. Self-confidence develops from the confidence one has in own self. To gain self-confidence, one has to adopt a few strategies: Firstly one should always have a positive thought that will help in achieving and realizing one’s own dreams and goals.During my recent visit to Dubai I had the privilege of taking part in a Conference for Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders. More than 400 local UAE business leaders were competing for the Business Decision Maker of the Year Award. Each business leader had just 20 minutes to describe two strategic decisions they’d taken the previous year and describe the impact of their decisions on both their business and leadership. I was truly amazed and inspired as I listened to all the innovative resolutions that some of the delegates had executed. Truth is each one of us has the ability to come up with creative and amazing decisions. It’s just that mainly of us don’t tap into this potential as often as we could. The overriding criterion for being a skillful decision maker, besides being creative, is having accessible alternatives and an abundance of confidence. To begin with, it’s easy to choose to stay in the comfort zone with limited means of thinking and rely on what’s worked for you in the past.

One should have an intense desire to reach the preferred goal with a worthy purpose. Make a note of one’s strengths and weaknesses: Listing down the strengths and weaknesses helps you in realizing your ability. Strengths help you in moving forward to achieve your goal and one can then focus on how to improve the weaknesses. One should never be afraid of showing positive strengths and qualities to others. Eliminate all negative thoughts of failure from the mind. Focus on how to achieve the goal. Always appreciate the positive things in yourself and recognize it. This helps in gaining confidence and can do wonders to people.

Always think of a positive outcome. If it comes out positive it is ok but if it is negative try it once again. Never give up trying. Success once achieved through hard work raises the bar of self confidence. Even if one has achieved and reached a goal, never believe it to be over. One goal leads to another and by doing so one gains confidence in oneself. They say appearances are deceptive but we are often judged on the basis of how we carry ourselves and how well we interact with people. Maintaining a straight posture and walking confidently has a positive impact. Always be happy and show a positive feeling. Smile to sum up, to gain self-confidence one should always be positive and think positively to convert the weaknesses into strengths. With strong determination and following the plan given above one can surely improve the self-confidence.

US House of Representatives passes health care bill

Monday, March 22, 2010

The United States House of Representatives has passed the controversial health care bill, as amended by the Senate. The bill passed 219 to 212.

“This bill is complicated, but it’s also very simple: Illness and infirmity are universal, and we are stronger against them together than we are alone,” Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said before the vote.

34 Democrats and all of the House Republicans voted against the bill.

“This trillion-dollar overhaul will take the America we know and love in the wrong direction,” said Representative Eric Cantor, the second most prominent House Republican.

“We have failed to listen to America and we have failed to reflect the will of our constituents,” House Minority Leader John Boehner said. “And when we fail to reflect that will, we fail ourselves and we fail our country.”

President Barack Obama will sign an Executive Order reaffirming the ban on federally funded abortions as part of an eleventh hour deal to get the bill passed.

Kenya government fires health worker strikers over failure to ‘report back to work’

Saturday, March 10, 2012

The Kenyan government has dismissed 25,000 striking health workers, mostly nurses, citing failure to heed government orders to recommence work and concern for the welfare of hospital patients. Speaking on behalf of the government, Alfred Mutua stated the workers were dismissed “illegally striking” and “[defying] the directive … to report back to work”, which he called “unethical”. The government asks that “[a]ll qualified health professionals, who are unemployed and/or retired have been advised to report to their nearest health facility for interviews and deployment”, Mutua stated.

The workers, who had been on strike for four days, were wishing to have improvements made to their wages, working conditions, and allowances. The strikes have caused a significant number of Kenyan hospitals to cease operations. According to Kenya Health Professionals Society spokesperson Alex Orina, the average monthly wage plus allowances for health workers in Kenya is KSh25,000 (£193, US$302 or €230) approximately. With an increasing number of reports of patients neglected in hospitals emerging, two trade unions met with the Kenyan government yesterday and negotitated a return to work, although a significant proportion of demonstrators defied the agreement, The Guardian reported.

Orina told Reuters the dismissals were “cat-and-mouse games, you cannot sack an entire workforce. It is a ploy to get us to rush back to work, but our strike continues until our demands are met”. Frederick Omiah, a member of the same society, believed the government’s actions would “make an already delicate and volatile situation worse”, expressing concern that demonstrations may continue in the capital Nairobi, amongst other locations. Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union chairperson Dr. Victor Ng’ani described government actions as “reckless”.

Mutua said the health workers were “no longer employees of the government” and had been eliminated from the payroll. While Ng’ani told the BBC of difficulties with finding other workers as skilled and experienced, Mutua reportedly stated that this would not be an issue. “We have over 100,000 to 200,000 health professionals looking for work today,” Mutua commented. “There will be a lag of a day or two … but it is better than letting people die on the floor, at the gate, or suffer in pain”.

Buying something made from a precious metal and set with gemstones is a fairly big investment for many people so it is important to them that they not only get good value for money but also end up with something that they will be happy to wear for a long time. This is even more important when the item in question is to be presented when making a proposal of marriage. There are two basic choices when it comes to where to shop: online stores and high street jewellers.

YouTube Preview Image

The advantage of going to a local shop is that there are often knowledgeable staff on hand who can advise you of the advantages of the various materials that the rings are made of and it can be easier to negotiate a discount when dealing with people face to face. Once a piece of jewellery has been selected you can also pay for it and take it away with you rather than having to wait for it to be delivered.

Diamond engagement rings bought from the internet may entail a short wait once they have been ordered but the very nature of the business model of online jewellers means that they can usually sell their products at significantly lower prices than their high street competitors. As more people are choosing to have rings made to their own specifications the time it takes to receive your purchase is often no different to what it would be if you bought one from a local jeweller.

It may be that you are worried about the authenticity of the precious metals and stones used by an online retailer but the hallmark system in the United Kingdom and the certification of diamonds by independent authorities should put your mind to rest on this front. Because a ring seen on the internet may look slightly different when you receive it, the better online stores will offer a no quibble money back guarantee. This means that you can make your purchase safe in the knowledge that if it is not exactly what you want then it can be returned for a full refund or exchanged for another one that you prefer. To make sure that this is possible you should check the terms and conditions on the jeweller’s website before placing your order.diamond engagement rings

Saturday, April 28, 2007

Grammy Award-winning rock band The White Stripes announced on Wednesday the Canadian leg of a tour in support of their soon-to-be-released album, Icky Thump. The tour, which would be the first cross-Canada excursion for The White Stripes, will see the band play dates in all provinces and territories.

The latest tour for The White Stripes will kick off June 1 in Nürburgring, Germany and will play several dates in Europe before starting off in Canada on June 24, in Burnaby, British Columbia. Canadian dates will include stops in northern locales such as Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Iqaluit, on Baffin Island.

The White Stripes, made up of guitarist/singer Jack White and drummer Meg White, have developed a significant worldwide following with their blend of punk and blues, guitar-oriented rock. The band had expressed interest in playing cities they had not yet visited. “Having never done a full tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog,” said Jack White on The White Stripes website. “We want to take this tour to the far reaches of the Canadian landscape. From the ocean to the permafrost.” The band’s website referred to Canada by its nickname, the ‘Great White North’.

The White Stripes have played to thousands in large outdoor festival settings, but will have to deal with different logistics while setting up in a northern location, such as Iqaluit.

Some 500 tickets for the Iqaluit show are to be sold, with an admission fee of approximately CA$40. Mike Bozzer, the city of Iqaluit’s economic development officer, told CBC News that talks have taken place with The White Stripes’ publicist regarding equipment, technicians, security and other such details. “It’s definitely going to have some economic impact, and they’ll come back home with positive stories of the city,” said Bozzer.

The band’s ten-year anniversary will be reached at a point during the Canadian leg of the tour, which will be commemorated. “Another special moment of this tour is the show which will occur in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 14th, The White Stripes’ Tenth Anniversary,” said Jack White.

Following the Canadian dates, The White Stripes will embark on a tour in the United States, which will reach some 16 states they have not yet visited during their career, among other repeat locations.

Showers Of Crepe Paper

Showers of Crepe Paper

Bridal showers and baby showers are a lot of fun and decorating them in crepe paper is a great inexpensive way to decorate for both types of showers. So we will call this article Showers of Crepe Paper!

In this article we will look at some of the ways you can bring a bridal or baby shower to life with beautiful crepe paper decorations!

YouTube Preview Image

Bridal Showers

One of the most popular and common bridal shower decorations that can be made out of crepe paper is paper flowers. For a bridal shower you can make all sorts of floral arrangements such as; centerpieces, candle centerpieces and free-flowing arrangements. Some people also choose to make an archway or entranceway arrangement that can be hung over the doorway.

Gift bags are often closed and a stem-less paper flower can be attached as a decoration that the guests can take home with them. Or often times a single flower vase is made for each guests to take home as a thank you gift.

Flowers have been and always will be a huge part of a bridal shower and or wedding even if the bride does not care for flowers or claims she does not have a green thumb for the real ones. Luckily for her she does not have to worry about killing her paper flowers because she forgot to water, feed or remove them from the scorching sun.

Another huge benefit for brides is they can keep the flowers used to decorate the bridal shower and recycle them to decorate the church or reception so the flowers never go to waste.

Baby Showers

Paper flowers are not as popular at baby showers as they are at bridal showers but there is certainly plenty of room for gorgeous crepe paper flowers at a baby shower.

If the gender of the baby is known then you can make your paper flower centerpieces out of girl or boy colors. This does make it easier for the woman or women in charge of making the flowers but on the other hand it can be a lot of fun to make flowers of all different colors.

Next do you need a great book on paper flower making and the crepe paper to make your flowers with? If so we have just the books for you and the best crepe paper for your crafting needs. Check out our website at:

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

  • Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender
  • Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5
  • Lights & Sounds Coal Tender
  • James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors *#5 Coal Tender
  • Red Skarloey Engine
  • Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach
  • Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck
  • Red Musical Caboose
  • Red Sodor Line Caboose
  • Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side
  • Red Baggage Car
  • Red Holiday Caboose
  • Red “Sodor Mail” Car
  • Red Fire Brigade Truck
  • Red Fire Brigade Train
  • Deluxe Sodor Fire Station
  • Red Coal Car
  • Yellow Box Car
  • Red Stop Sign
  • Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign
  • Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece
  • Smelting Yard
  • Ice Cream Factory

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

NZ man stabbed in the face with a 15-centimetre knife

Friday, July 7, 2006

A 36-year-old man, who is yet to be named, is undergoing surgery after an attacker lodged a knife through one cheek and out the other. The handle broke off, leaving the 15-cm (about 6 inches) blade inside him. The man was rushed to hospital today, July 7, at about 2 a.m. NZST. The attack occurred last night after a domestic row in Albany on Auckland‘s North Shore.

New Zealand Police report that the knife just missed his optic nerve and his condition is stable and not life threatening.

John Chaplin, head and neck surgeon said, “the man could be treated relatively simply. The major blood vessels of the head were further back in the neck and the knife could be relatively easily removed in an operating theatre where bleeding could be controlled.”

The police have issued an arrest warrant for Vance Paraki Tuheke, 31-year-old, in relation to the attack.

The victim may suffer from some facial numbness.

Presenting The Real Christmas Elves And Santa’s Little Helpers

By John Smith

There don’t appear to be many accounts of people having ever spotted a real Christmas Elf or helper, though we know they must exist otherwise how else would everything get done at Christmas time? Well, here are just a few tips on how to organise yourself this Christmas, with or without the help of these present pixies.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Though December the 25th might be the official Christmas day, we all know that lots of preparation must be put in beforehand. Spread the season of goodwill around early this year with some Handmade Christmas Cards. They could be given as early Christmas presents for the little ones or just special Christmas Presents for those on your Christmas Card list; either way, they are sure to add a bit of festive cheer to anyone who gets one. Before you start shopping for the other Christmas presents, why not really sprinkle a bit of Santa’s magic around the home with an official ‘Christmas Letter to Santa Kit’? These Christmas presents are surely the best way of passing on that all important information to those hardworking Christmas Elves.

Deck the Halls

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a little bit of tinsel or that all important tree. Unfortunately the Christmas Elves are likely to be a bit busy arranging the Christmas presents so you’ll have to enlist the help of your own little helpers on this one. You could add a few special tokens to the tree this year with the ’12 Days of Christmas Decoration’ or a ‘Snowlace Christmas Glass Decoration’ for that really Christmassy feel. They can make lovely Christmas presents for someone else or even just a little treat for your own family this year.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

If you’re going to be hosting the festivities this year then why not push the sleigh out and make it a really magical experience for the whole family. They should be able to amuse themselves once all the Christmas presents have been opened, and if a vat of mulled wine or a festive ‘Snowball’ doesn’t keep them entertained, then you may need a backup plan. ‘The Christmas Game’ can make wonderful Christmas presents or stocking filers for the whole family these little tins have a host of jokes and games that will keep the troops entertained whilst you peel the potatoes and season the sprouts. After dinner, why not play something that the whole family can get involved with such as a game of charades, or ‘Who’s in the Bag Game’? These Christmas presents offer hours of fun and are guaranteed to give the family a very merry Christmas.

Let Them Know It’s Christmas Time

“Feed The World” so said the members of band Aid, but surely feeding a family at Christmas is hard enough! If it’s your turn to make the Christmas dinner this year then fear not, help is hand with a number of Christmas presents. Get the kids involved by treating them to a ‘Kid’s Recipe File’. With a little luck, these Christmas presents might even relieve you of all cooking duties next year and let Santa’s little helpers do most of the hard work! If you’re after something a bit more traditional this year then how about some tradition recipes from ‘Mrs Manley’s Christmas Treats’, or some tips from the famous ‘Mrs Beeton’s Everyday Cooking’? These ladies are surely the real Santa’s helpers and make for some truly welcome Christmas presents. If you’re going to someone else’s house this Christmas then why not treat them to some special Christmas presents that might even help them out. There are a selection of personalised champagnes, wine and spirits to choose from which can be shared by everyone or make wonderful keepsake Christmas presents. Luxury Christmas hampers can do a lot of the work for you, and make lovely Christmas presents either for your own family or someone else.

Merry Christmas Everybody

When all of the festivities are drawing to a close and you finally have a few moments to yourself, why not enlist Santa’s little helpers to do the washing up whilst you kick off the new slippers and enjoy your own Christmas presents. Treat yourself this year with some Christmas presents that you can really enjoy such a ‘Pamper Me Bathroom Bundle’ or ‘The Ultimate Chocoholics Indulgence’ a great way to start the countdown for next year’s big day.

Romanian government to strengthen laws against tax evasion

Monday, April 11, 2005

The Romanian government has drafted legislation pertaining to tax evasion that makes it a criminal offence on the same level as crimes against individuals. Developed with the aid of Romania’s business community, the new law is expected to reduce corruption and tax evasion. According to the new law, the maximum jail term for tax evasion will be boosted up to 20 years. This sentence, however, will only be passed in circumstances of large-scale fraud. For evasion of up to the equivalent of 10,000 euro, the punishment will be either a fine or up to 2 years in prison. For tax fraud of up to 500,000 euro, the term will be extended to 2-8 years in prison. It is only for those whose tax evasion exceeds 1 million euro that the jail term will range between 10 and 20 years.

In the same package of legislation, the government approved several changes to banckruptcy law, which makes it easier for businesses to file for bankruptcy. The new laws are expected to make Romania’s business environment cleaner, resulting in more foreign investment, less corruption and more revenue for the government.

At the start of the year, the Romanian government introduced a new flat tax system for Romania, in which the tax rate is 19% for both personal income and corporate profit. This has led Romania to have one of the most liberal tax policies in Europe. The lower rate of tax has already reduced fiscal evasion to a significant extent because more people and businesses are encouraged to pay the tax. However, in order to further reduce the grey economy in Romania, advisers said at the start of the year that the government must also back this up with tougher legislation against tax evasion. Previously, Romania’s tax evasion laws were fairly lax, leading to quite a significant extent of tax fraud. Now, with the new, highly-publicised tax evasion laws, it is expected that the risk of getting prosecuted for not paying an already-low tax rate will force many businesses out of the black market into the legal economy.
