US Congresswoman Jackie Speier comments about Obamacare, Paralympics

Saturday, November 9, 2013

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

PBS show asserts greenhouse gases, atmospheric pollutants dimming future

Saturday, April 22, 2006

This week, the Public Broadcasting Service aired a NOVA program titled “Dimming the Earth”, which presented research by leading scientists on the complex systems of our global climate and human activity’s effect on it. One of the largest interactions (or “inputs”) humans have with the atmosphere is the ever-increasing use of fossil fuels. Consumption has risen 2% per year for this decade.

Fossil fuels burnt in factories and automobiles send their waste into our atmosphere in two forms. The first is CO2 and other greenhouse gases, which have received substantial attention in the last few years because of the way they trap heat in the atmosphere. The second is the tiny particles of sulfur dioxide, soot and ash, which scientists call aerosols (basically smog). Research into understanding the negative health effects of air pollution has resulted in the development of catalytic converters for cars as well as devices to remove particulate solids from industrial waste before it reaches the air.

More recently, atmospheric scientists have come upon the phenomenon of the reduction of direct sunlight reaching Earth’s surface— observing a nearly a 5% decline between 1960 and 1990, with evidence of a recovery since then. This has been dubbed the “global dimming” effect, and is probably due to the way these aerosols act upon clouds. It is important to realise that this does not represent a net loss of this much sunshine to the climate system – if so, large temperature declines would have been observed. Instead, the sunshine is absorbed elsewhere in the system, with a much smaller net loss.

Clouds form when moisture gathers around airborne particles, such as pollen or dust. Clouds formed by the aerosol particles emitted by fossil fuel consumption are made of many more tiny droplets than “natural” clouds. These smog-created clouds have two notable effects: they shield sunlight from reaching Earth’s surface and, due to water’s reflective nature, the millions of tiny droplets suspended in them reflect light back into space, allowing even less light to reach Earth.

Many scientists now believe that global dimming caused by these pollutants has mitigated the temperature rises brought about by global warming. Over the last thirty years, Earth’s temperature has increased by about 0.5 oC.

In the absence of global dimming, however, the Earth might be 0.3 oC warmer than it currently is, suggesting that a “tug-of-war” exists between greenhouse gases and particulates released by burning fossil fuels. Efforts to mitigate the human health dangers of smog have allowed more heat into our atmosphere and brought about a sharper increase in global warming.

Dr. James E. Hansen, professor at Columbia University and the head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies [1], believes that if we continue on our current pattern, this warming could be as much as five degrees in the next thirty years and ten to fourteen degrees over the course of the century. Such a temperature rise would devastate life on Earth, likely bringing on a cascade of self-reinforcing warming effects. Earth’s forests drying and burning, a steady thawing of the Greenland and arctic ice sheets, and, most dangerous of all, a release of the methane hydrates that are now frozen at the bottom of the oceans, could remake the planet into something inhospitable to human life. Dr. Hansen warns that, according to his research, man has just 10 years to reduce greenhouse gases before global warming and other responses to human activity by Earth’s climate reach a “tipping point”, becoming unstoppable.

Youngevity is an international direct marketing company which has been reselling high quality products since inception in, 1997. Founded by Dr. Joel Wallach and Dr. Ma Lan originally as AL Global, Inc and changed to Youngevity in, 2006. Youngevity has satisfied hundreds of thousands of customers around the global with over a quarter of a billion in gross sales. Youngeivty is unique because not only are they strategically positioned within the health and wellness industry but also promotes other products in high demand markets.

Products: Youngevity promotes probably a wider array of health and wellness products than any other company in the market place. The primary product line is made up of vitamins and mineral supplements to support a healthy lifestyle however it expands much greater. Additional products include high energy sports drinks, fruit & vegetalbe capsules, home & garden products, a diet line and even products for your pets. Youngevity also markets personal care products such as, shampoo & conditioner, a make up line and skin care products. Recently they entered into an agreement to market an eco-efficient fuel product. These are just the products sold under Youngevity and do not even include product marketed by the “Youngevity Family Companies”.Market: Youngevity is positioned to handle the needs and desires of the Baby Boomer. As the largest segment of our population grows older, with the oldest “Boomer” turning 65 in, 2011, the one thing they hold near and dear to their heart is maintaining their youth and vitality. Demand will continue to grow in this already multi-billion dollar industry. The only issue to consider is that Youngevity has literally thousands of other companies competing for these dollars.Leadership: Dr. Joel Wallach, co-founder of Youngevity has been involved in biomedical research and clinical medicine for over 30 years. Dr. Wallach has also co-authored text books and still travels the world giving health lectures which include information about becoming involved with Youngevity. “Dead Doctor’s Don’t Lie” was created by Wallach after years of research. Discovering that the life span of the average doctor in American is several years shorter than that of the average couch potato Dr. Wallach reveals his findings in this tape.. It’s estimated that approximately 46 million copies of this tape were sold worldwide and used by countless numbers of network marketing companies over the years to promote the need for nutritional supplements. This tape has been a great informational tool as well as an eye opener. Many people became distributors with a variety of different companies as a result however this method may be a little dated for growing a business with all the technological advances.Compensation Plan: Youngevity uses a unilevel compensation plan which rewards associates with up to 8 levels of compensation plus associates can qualify for generational overrides. Associates can also earn a “Quick Start Bonus” as well as leadership incentives called “Dream Bonus”. This well balanced compensation plan is capable of producing part time income to full time income and can even produce a substanital income for the associates who can build large teams. Building large organization and teams can sometimes take time however using both offline and online strategies these time periods can be compressed.Youngevity has the potential to be a solid business opportunity. I would recommend finding a strong team which uses both ‘old school’ and current technology to promote the business.

I have found that many associates are only using ‘old school’ methods to build their business. These methods work and have for over 50 years however they might not be the most effective ways of building today. Technology provides you a systematic method of building the business, can compress time and create additional streams of income. There is free information and training waiting for you which can dramaticly increase your results with Youngevity or any other network marketing business.

Yes, I want the free information and training. NOW!

India: Cabinet approves capital punishment for rape of girls under age twelve

Monday, April 23, 2018

On Saturday, India’s Union Cabinet approved capital punishment in an ordinance for the rape of girls under the age of twelve. This comes after nationwide protests that took place in various cities after an eight-year-old girl was gang-raped and killed in Kathua city in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Government has taken serious note of incidents of rape in various parts of the country […] while expressing deep anguish over such incidents, it has been decided to devise a comprehensive response to deal with the solution”, the special emergency cabinet said. Earlier this month retired government official Sanji Ram and several others —including multiple police officers— were arrested for, or in relation to, the gang rape and murder of Asifa, an eight-year-old Muslim girl, who police said was held captive and sedated at a temple in Kathua. On April 13, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a Bharatiya Janta Party’s Minister of Legislative Assembly, who is accused of raping a teenage girl in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Another rape and murder of an eleven-year-old girl took place in Gujarat’s Surat district. According to the postmortem report, she was tortured, raped, strangled and smothered.

The ordinance, which was approved by India’s president Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday, prescribed National Crime Records Bureau to maintain nationwide database and profiles for sexual offenders, setting up new fast-track courts, special rape-case forensic kits in all police stations and hospitals, and setting up special forensic labs.

The cabinet also recommended mandatory completion of rape investigation within a period of two months, prison term for convicts of rape of girls under the age of sixteen has been raised to twenty years, extending up to life-long imprisonment. Previously, it was ten years. Prison term for convicts of rape of females above the age of sixteen has been increased from seven to ten years. The ordinance document had no mention of rape of boys and men, Reuters reported.

In 2016, about 40 thousand rape cases were reported across the union, and roughly 40% of the victims were children. A law ministry official said, “An ordinance today is the best was to deal with the issue. An amendment bill will have to wait when the monsoon session of parliament commences.” The monsoon session of the Parliament of India begins in July.

The Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences and Evidence Act are affected by the ordinance.

Women’s right activist Kirti Singh told Al Jazeera, “Studies have shown that death penalty does not act as deterrent. Our experience shows the same. We are against death penalty.” She added, “Some people in India act in with impunity, thinking that they won’t be punished. The certainty of the punishment, rather than severity of it, should be made sure”.

The December 2012 gang rape case in India’s capital New Delhi led to the amendment of criminal laws, establishing a provision of the death penalty to the convict if a woman is killed or left in a “vegetative state” after rape. It came as an ordinance, originally. The adult convicts of that case were sentenced to death, but it has not been carried out. The last time a convict received capital punishment in India was in 2015.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

Miners survive underground fire in Tasmania

Tuesday, January 3, 2006

Three miners have escaped uninjured after being trapped underground by a mineshaft fire on Tasmania’s west coast. The men took shelter in a chamber more than a kilometre underground. A worker noticed smoke coming from a shaft at Avebury nickel mine on Trial Harbour Road near Zeehan at 7.45am.

The blaze started after a truck working 400 metres underground toppled and caught fire. It took nearly five hours for rescue teams to bring the blaze under control, move the burning truck and reach the trapped miners.

Allegiance Mining chairman Tony Howland-Rose said the workers were safe. “The emergency response procedures in place at Avebury were activated and resulted in the vehicle fire being extinguished and the safe rescue of the miners,” Mr Howland-Rose said.

Ambulance crews say the men appear to be in good health. Queenstown Police Inspector Mark Beech-Jones says rescue workers reached the men just before midday.

“We’ve dispatched a number of ambulance service personnel there just to give them a check up but from our initial discussions with them, they are fine,” he said.

The Avebury nickel mine is a new project for the Sydney-based company – Allegiance Mining. Allegiance suspended trading on the stock exchange this morning. Mr Howland-Rose said the suspension of trading would be in place until it became clear what had happened at the mine.

The mine is undergoing a $60 million redevelopment and was due to resume mining later this year.
